Our foundation is built on the Danish folk high school tradition, where education is about life, people, and community – not exams or grades. At Gram Højskole we believe that learning happens best when curiosity, trust, and engagement are at the center.
We value community and belonging. Living and learning together creates strong relationships, mutual respect, and a sense of responsibility for one another. Every student is seen, heard, and encouraged to be themselves.
We believe in personal growth and freedom. At Gram Højskole, students are given the space to explore their interests, challenge themselves, and develop both confidence and independence. Learning is driven by passion, dialogue, and active participation.
Democracy, openness, and responsibility are core principles in our everyday life. We encourage open-mindedness, critical thinking, and respect for differences. Students take part in shaping the school community and learn the value of contributing to something bigger than themselves.
Finally, we believe in learning for life. The experiences, friendships, and insights gained at Gram Højskole are meant to inspire students long after their stay – helping them move forward with courage, awareness, and a strong sense of who they are.

We have had international students on every semester so far and we try to incorporate them in the lessons by translating.
All subjects and sessions are in Danish and are translated into English, so it is IMPORTANT that you know English at a minimum basic level.
However we encourage international students to choose practical minor subjects, like creative, craft and movement classes, so there will be less talking and more doing.
The typical student attending a semesters is from age 18 – 30 and is either about to start, to finish or in between a BA and a MA degree.
You can choose either a single or a double room. There will be an additional fee if you choose a single room. (€ 40 per week). We recommend to choose a double room to get the full experience of being at a folk high school.
Each room has a sink with mirror, a bed, a desk and some storage. Toilets and showers are shared with 4-6 other students.
In theory, yes. However some of the workshops occur simultaneously, and since you can’t be in two places at the same time, you would have to choose one over the other.
For the minor workshops we strongly suggest that you choose a subject in which you will not need to participate in a lot of discussions as these primarily will be in Danish.
But don´t worry. We always find a solution. And you will not have to choose neither main nor minor subject before arriving at Gram Højskole.
A semester at Gram Højskole is divided into three schedule periods in which you may choose one main and one minor subject in each period.
In the fall semester the periods last 6 weeks and in the spring they are 8 weeks.
In the bigger picture that means that you will have the opportunity to choose 3 main and 3 minor subjects during your stay. It may be 3 different main subjects – lone periode of Textile, one with Ceramics and one with Nature Craft – or maybe 3 main subjects all working with ceramics in all periods. It is your choice if you want to focus or open your horizons to things you did not now would be interesting..
In addition to your major and minor subjects, you also take part in various joint courses with all students. Here we work with student democracy, the major ideas and current events in the world, and the folk high school community as a whole.
Each week the students meet for one hour. The meeting is mandatory. Here you may form different committees and discuss what these committees should do. It could be dommittees like a party committee, japanese food committee, plant dying committe, star gazing committee. There are no limits.
Committees are groups of students who work together to create themes activities and animations.
Families are groups of students supervised by a teacher. They take turns being responsible for cleaning or cooking tasks as well as weekend brunches, and meet on Wednesdays during lunch to discuss how things are going and talk about upcoming events.
There are no classes on weekends. Students will in turn be responsible for a brunch at 11:00 and dinner at 18:00, but apart from that students are free.
Activities, parties or trips are very often organized by the students themselves, but you can also take that time to relax.
“I chose Gram Højskole because I wanted to find out what I like. When we have spare time, we play volleyball and watch movies. The most cozy time is talking with my roomies in our room” – Hiroka, Japan
